Twitter expands character limit to 280

By Kelly Sargent.
Brevity no more: Twitter is upping its character limit from 140 to 280! Donald Trump frequently uses Twitter to announce policy decisions and can now fit two policies into the one tweet . . . ah hm . . .
Twitter claims the move is an attempt to eliminate what it viewed as constraints that kept people from tweeting more frequently. Apparently, according to its internal research, stringent character limit was prohibiting people from tweeting more (couldn’t be the rising popularity of Instagram and Snapchat amirite?)
It’s a strange move by Twitter who is known and loved for its brevity; although it’s a logical move by the 11-year-old startup to increase its users from 328 million.
In 2016 Twitter allowed images and GIFs to appear with tweets without affecting the overall character limit. The 280 character limit will begin in small test groups around the world and will be randomly selected. Should you feel like a rant, go tweet about it and see how it fits, we think 280 characters ought to do it. Tweet tweet.
